Construction and Practice of a Military Packaging System: From Standard Optimization to Technological Application
A Brief Analysis of Military Packaging and Standards
In modern warfare, military packaging plays an increasingly critical role in ensuring the supply and logistical support of military materiel. Only by adopting scientifically sound and rational packaging methods can the intended functions of military equipment be reliably maintained, thereby enabling weapons and systems to achieve combat readiness efficiently.
Therefore, gaining a deep understanding of the core principles underlying military‑grade packaging, rigorously adhering to relevant packaging design guidelines, carefully selecting appropriate protective measures, and conducting military‑grade packaging design in a scientifically sound manner are essential strategies for enhancing the protective performance of military equipment and improving its adaptability to battlefield conditions.

Definition of Military Packaging
In U.S. military standardization documents, the term “military packaging” is commonly used to describe military‑grade packaging, indicating that the U.S. military primarily approaches the study of military‑material packaging from an engineering and technical perspective.
In the U.S. military’s ML-STD-20731E, “Military Packaging Standard Procedure,” military packaging is defined as a means of specifying the military protective requirements and packing guidelines for designated items, with the primary objective of ensuring that the items remain undamaged during transportation and storage.
Based on the definition of “packaging” provided in the national standard GB 4421.1, “Packaging Terminology,” and taking into account the specific characteristics of military products, Chinese professionals in the field of military packaging have further refined the definition as follows: Military packaging involves the specialized treatment of military equipment, devices, and supplies through the selection of appropriate materials and containers and the application of scientifically sound processing methods, ensuring that these items can effectively withstand external impacts and adverse environmental conditions throughout the entire lifecycle—handling, transportation, storage, and use—thereby achieving the objectives of product protection, streamlined logistics, optimized support processes, and convenient end‑use. It represents the integrated application of a comprehensive suite of technical measures and methodologies.

The Current Status and Optimization Directions of Military Packaging in China
At present, military packaging in our armed forces still exhibits vulnerabilities and constraints in adapting to battlefield environmental conditions, meeting logistical support requirements, and aligning with the development of informationization, thus falling short of the core objective of being “capable of fighting and winning.”
In response to this situation, the relevant project team has launched an intensive research effort: on the one hand, it closely monitors developments in the national packaging development plan and draws on the objectives and experiences of key national projects in the packaging field; on the other hand, it assimilates advanced achievements from foreign militaries’ packaging initiatives. By systematically summarizing and analyzing the implications for the development of military‑product packaging in China—focusing on critical dimensions such as packaging standardization and civil–military integration—it seeks to promote the deep application and practical translation of new packaging technologies and materials within the military‑product sector.
Optimizing the Standard System for Military Product Packaging
Based on the degree of correlation among the attributes of standardized objects, the research team systematically optimized the existing military‑product packaging system architecture and associated projects, establishing a two‑tiered framework that comprises 10 categories of general foundational standards and 20 categories of specialized general standards.
A key breakthrough of this optimization is the first-ever incorporation of nationally developed, dual-use advanced packaging standards into the military‑product packaging standards system. At the same time, new packaging standards have been added for specialized fields such as classified communications, surveying and mapping, and meteorology, thereby clarifying the hierarchical structure of the military‑product packaging standards system, refining its classification logic, broadening its professional scope, and enhancing its scalability—laying a solid foundation for the integration of future standards in additional domains.
Clarify the development vision and core tasks.
In light of the development needs of military‑product packaging within the coming period, the research team has proposed six core development objectives, fifteen priority development themes, and six major system‑building tasks, and has systematically formulated a comprehensive roadmap for advancing this new conceptual framework.
These achievements provide a clear blueprint and actionable guidelines for the orderly implementation of military‑product packaging during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, helping to advance the high‑quality development of China’s military‑product packaging sector and better support the modernization of national defense and the armed forces.
